Where Can I Sell My Locked iPhone in Dubai? What to Do Before You Sell

Short answer: almost nowhere worth selling to. Reputable phone buyers in Dubai, including SellMyPhone.ae, do not buy iCloud-locked or blacklisted iPhones. The few places that do will pay you a fraction of what the phone is worth. US buyback data shows an activation-locked iPhone fetches only 10% to 50% of its unlocked value.

Here is the good news. If the phone is yours, most locks come off in under an hour. Once it is unlocked, it sells at full market price like any other iPhone.

This guide walks you through it in order: work out which lock you have, remove it the proper way, avoid the traps, then sell.

First, Work Out Which Lock Your iPhone Has

"Locked" can mean four very different things, and each one has a different fix. What you see on the screen usually tells you which one you are dealing with.

What you see on the screen

The lock

Can you fix it yourself?

"iPhone Locked to Owner", or a request for an Apple Account after a reset

iCloud / Activation Lock

Yes, with your Apple Account password, or through Apple with your original receipt

"iPhone Unavailable" or "Security Lockout" after wrong passcodes

Passcode lock

Yes, by erasing the phone

"SIM not supported" when you insert a SIM from another network

Carrier lock

Usually, through the original carrier

Works on Wi-Fi but gets no signal on any SIM

Blacklisted or blocked IMEI

Only if the block was placed by mistake

If the phone still opens, go to Settings > General > About. The Carrier Lock line shows whether the phone has SIM restrictions, and the IMEI listed there is the number every serious buyer checks before paying.

iCloud Activation Lock: The Lock That Stops Most Sales

Activation Lock switches on automatically when Find My is turned on. It ties the iPhone to the Apple Account that set it up, so even after a full reset the phone asks for that account before anyone can use it. It is the main reason stolen iPhones are so hard to resell, and it is exactly what a buyer looks for first.

Most of the locked phones we come across are not stolen at all. Someone reset the phone but never signed out, which is one of the most common phone selling mistakes we see. The fix depends on what you still have access to.

If you know your Apple Account password

  1. On the "iPhone Locked to Owner" screen, enter the Apple Account email and password that was used on the phone. On recent iOS versions you can also tap Unlock with Passcode and type the phone's old screen passcode instead.
  2. Once you are in, go to Settings > [your name] > Sign Out, and turn off Find My when it asks.
  3. Erase the phone from Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.

Already handed the phone to someone? You can still clear it remotely. Sign in at iCloud.com, open Find Devices, select the iPhone and choose Remove This Device. Apple explains each method in its guide on how to remove Activation Lock.

If you forgot your Apple Account password

Reset it through Apple's account recovery at iforgot.apple.com, using your trusted phone number or email. If you cannot get the code, Apple starts an account recovery process, which can take a few days for security reasons. It is slow, but it gives you back a fully working phone.

If you have the receipt but no account details

Apple can remove Activation Lock for the original owner. You can submit an Activation Lock support request online, or take the phone and receipt to an Apple Store, such as The Dubai Mall or Mall of the Emirates.

Apple is strict about what it accepts:

  • The original purchase receipt from Apple or an authorised Apple reseller.
  • The receipt must show the phone's serial number or IMEI.
  • The phone must not be in Lost Mode.

Receipts from second-hand sellers or marketplaces are usually refused, because Apple does not get involved in third-party sales. That is why we always tell people to keep the box and receipt from the day they buy a new iPhone.

If you bought the phone second-hand and it is locked

Contact the seller and ask them to remove the phone from their account. They can do it in two minutes from iCloud.com without the phone in hand. If they refuse or stop answering, treat it as a warning sign, because the phone may not have been theirs to sell. Do not pay an "unlock" service to fix it (more on that below).

Forgot Your Passcode? Erase the Phone, Then Sell It

A forgotten passcode is the easiest lock to fix, because you are allowed to erase your own phone. Erasing removes the passcode. After that, Activation Lock asks for your Apple Account, so you will still need those details.

Option 1: On the phone. On newer iOS versions, after several wrong attempts the lock screen offers an option to erase the iPhone. Tap it and enter your Apple Account password.

Option 2: From iCloud.com. Sign in, open Find Devices, select the iPhone and choose Erase This Device.

Option 3: Recovery Mode with a computer. Connect the phone to a Mac or Windows PC. On an iPhone 8 or later, press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the recovery screen appears. In Finder or the Apple Devices app, choose Restore.

One honest warning: erasing deletes everything. If you have no iCloud or computer backup, your photos and messages go with it. If the data matters, try every password you might have used before you erase.

Carrier Lock: Rare in the UAE, But Check Imported Phones

Most iPhones bought new from Apple or major UAE retailers come without SIM restrictions. Phones brought in from abroad are a different story. In the US, for example, many iPhones are sold through carriers and stay locked to that network until the contract is paid off.

To check, open Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. If it says No SIM restrictions, you are fine. If it shows anything else, only the original carrier can unlock it. Contact them with the phone's IMEI and ask for an unlock; many carriers do it on request once the phone is paid off.

A carrier-locked phone is worth much less in Dubai, because it cannot take a du or e& SIM. Unlocking it first is almost always worth the effort.

Blacklisted or Blocked IMEI

Every phone has an IMEI number. When a phone is reported lost or stolen, its IMEI can be blocked so it cannot connect to mobile networks. A blacklisted iPhone may still work on Wi-Fi, but it will not get a signal on any SIM.

No legitimate buyer will touch a blacklisted phone, and an IMEI check is part of how resale prices are calculated in Dubai. If your own phone was blocked by mistake, for example you reported it lost and later found it, contact whoever placed the report, either your network provider or the police, and ask for it to be cleared with your proof of ownership.

Why You Should Skip "iCloud Unlock" Services

Search for iCloud unlock in Dubai and you will find services charging AED 500 to AED 2,000. The same goes for "bypass" software sold online. In our experience, these go one of three ways:

  • They take your money and disappear. There is no way to get it back.
  • They "bypass" the lock, not remove it. The phone may open, but calls, iCloud or updates stop working, and the next iOS update can bring the lock straight back.
  • They tamper with the IMEI. This is illegal, and it turns a locked phone into one that nobody can legally buy.

Even when a bypass seems to work, the phone fails a buyer's checks. Apple's own process is the only route that gives you back a fully working iPhone you can sell.

Why SellMyPhone.ae Doesn't Buy Locked iPhones

We will be straight with you. We do not buy iCloud or activation-locked phones, blacklisted IMEIs or IMEI-tampered devices. You can see this on our list of devices we accept and don't accept.

The reason is simple. A locked phone cannot be checked, wiped or passed on to its next owner, and some of the locked phones in circulation are stolen. Refusing them protects you too: the next time you buy a used phone in Dubai, you want the seller to have followed the same rules.

Once your iPhone is unlocked, we buy it at full market value, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and cash on the spot.

Unlocked It? Here's How to Sell for the Full Price

Now that the lock is gone, a few quick steps make sure you get the best offer:

  1. Sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My, so the lock cannot come back.
  2. Erase the phone and remove your SIM card or delete your eSIM.
  3. Check battery health in Settings > Battery. It is one of the biggest factors in your offer; here is how battery health affects iPhone resale value.
  4. Keep the box and receipt. The same receipt that gets you through Apple also adds trust when you sell.
  5. Know what your model is worth before you accept an offer. For example, see how much an iPhone 14 Pro sells for in Dubai.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you sell a locked iPhone in Dubai?

Not to reputable buyers. Most Dubai buyers, including SellMyPhone.ae, refuse iCloud-locked and blacklisted iPhones. If the phone is yours, remove the lock first and you can sell it at full market price.

How much is an iCloud-locked iPhone worth?

Very little. US buyback data puts an activation-locked iPhone at about 10% to 50% of its unlocked value, because it can usually only be sold for parts.

How do I know if my iPhone is iCloud locked?

After a reset, an iCloud-locked iPhone shows "iPhone Locked to Owner" and asks for the Apple Account that was used on it. If it opens normally, it is not locked.

Can Apple remove Activation Lock in Dubai?

Yes, for the original owner. Submit an Activation Lock support request online or visit an Apple Store with the original receipt from Apple or an authorised reseller showing the serial number or IMEI.

What if I forgot my iPhone passcode before selling?

Erase the phone from the lock screen, from iCloud.com or with Recovery Mode on a computer. Then sign in with your Apple Account to clear Activation Lock.

Are iPhones sold in the UAE carrier locked?

Most iPhones bought new from Apple or major UAE retailers have no SIM restrictions. Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock; "No SIM restrictions" means it is unlocked.

Is it legal to sell an iCloud-locked iPhone?

Selling your own locked phone honestly for parts is not illegal, but selling a phone you know is stolen, or using IMEI tampering or lock bypass tools, is. The safest route is to remove the lock properly first.

I bought a second-hand iPhone that is locked. What should I do?

Ask the seller to remove it from their account through iCloud.com. If they refuse or disappear, do not pay an unlock service; the phone may not have been theirs to sell.
